Hello,
I'm actually in New Mexico, but I'm quite interested in the subject!
Has anyone seen high school competitions such as spaceset.org? Getting
behind a mars related competition might be a good idea - one problem
that might be associated with such an effort is "advertising" or
"getting the word out" - to as many potential participants as possible.
I guess that can be a double edged sword, because more participation can
require more funding to support it. There are many possible ways to
get/find the funding, including from for profit and non-profit
companies... For instance, I am working with the company I work for to
help financially support a regional competition for spaceset.org either
the weekend before or the weekend after STAIF 2007.
Another interesting organization to check out might be the AIAA
(American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics) - they have
references to all kinds of space competitions and conferences.
I am an Electrical Engineer, currently holding an IT position supporting
everything from embedded instruments, to high end Sun servers and large
linux clusters. I'm interested (as well as capable of designing or
deploying) in embedded systems, (automated)robotics, instrumentation,
communications, life support either in transit to or on mars, solving
the "dust" problem for an airlock, etc..
Maybe looking at other successful recruiting programs other
organizations would help give insight to how MS can recruit as well?
Some possible ones could be the AIAA, IEEE, AUVSI and others..
What do you think?

This was done mainly by contacting Senators and Congressmen to convince them to support NASA in a mission to Mars. We would also have a booth at events (such as science fairs) to let the general public know the MS existed and recruit new members. Other ideas we could try, but take more time and effort are, going to schools to get the kids and teachers interested in Mars.
